The Mysteries of the Spiral by Ian Milford

My parents always told me that life is a bunch of little stories, put together into one. Your stories and experiences that you go through make you who you are. You'll have to survive through hard times, and enjoy yourself at other times. My life goes exactly like that.

Who am I? Ian Milford, only the greatest musketeer in all of Skull Island. Everyone knows who I am... But it wasn't always that way. Like every great tale begins, I was barely even heard of.

How does an eight-year-old prisoner of the armada grow to become one of the greatest sharpshooters ever? You are about to find out. It all starts back a long time ago, when the spiral was formed... Okay, maybe not that long ago. Let's try when I was eight. I was on a boat with my parents and their crew as we sailed away into the gate between two worlds: Monquista and Valencia. Of course, I had never had proper education, so I didn't know what Valencia was. The only education I had was how to shoot a shark with a rifle. And boy, was I good at it! I learned everything I knew from my father, Humphrey Milford. Though highly unheard of, he was a hunter from Skull Mountain.

So as we exited Monquista once and for all (Which was very rough, might I add. We were ambushed by renegade monkeys) I was excited as we entered Aragon Skyway... until I saw what it was: The ruins of an ancient world, Dragonspyre. I saw only skeletal dragons and the rocky remains of the volcanoes and mountains of Dragonspyre. I heard tell of a great war--one of the greatest to ever be fought. All of the undead in Dragonspyre, the dragons, everything... against one person. I heard he took down a sinister wizard. I hope to research it someday. My mother, Amy Milford, said that she found it to be very interesting. Of course, that was about one thousand years ago.

As my father continued steering, we dodged dragons from left to right. We barely made it out and escaped through the gateway to the sinister, yet still remaining, Valencia. I had pictured it with bright skies, green plains, and lots of cutthroats to fight. Boy, was I wrong! I saw these weird mechanical ships. I assumed they were friendly, until they opened fire on us. That's where my tale truly begins.

Thursday, April 15

I woke up to a startling noise after sleeping as we sailed through the skyway. I got out of my bunk bed (Which I shared with my little sister, Kayla Milford) and walked outside. The sky was dark. I saw mechanical ships rapidly firing at us.

"Run!" my father shouted. "Amy, take Ian and Kayla and take cover in the bedroom!"

"But, Humphrey, you can't do this by yourself!" mother yelled.

"I am not alone, Amy! I have my companions!"

Of course, he only had five. And who could tell how many were on the enemy ship?

However, these five companions are very strong. Jack Russel, finest dog with a blade if ever there were one. Dead Mike... he could just scare them off. Plus his blade was very deadly. I forgot the names of the other three- they never talk to me. A wharf rat, a crab thug, and a guinea pig.

Before I could ask what was happening, I was pulled back inside.

"What is going on!?" Kayla shrieked.

"Shh. It'll be alright. Your father can handle these armada," mother said.

I didn't bother to ask who the armada were, and apparently Kayla didn't either. Everything was noisy for a few minutes, just cannons firing back and forth. Then, everything went wrong.

"We're running low on ammunition!" Mike yelled from below.

My eyes grew wide. Time to be boarded, I thought.

I thought right. I could hear the enemy bridges slam onto our boat. Let the battle begin. The Skull Island Scoundrels vs. The weird... ROBOTS? I began to hear guns firing and swords clinking. I could tell Kayla was getting scared. And I admit, I was getting nervous, also.

After about a minute, I could hear my father yell: "Jack, no!"

Then, I heard someone fall on the ground. Like I was curious.

"Kids, stay in here," mother said. She drew her blades and ran outside. She was a swashbuckler.

I stood in a corner. "Do you think we'll be alright Kayla?"

Kayla, known for her sarcastic ways, replied: "Oh, yes. Why don't we just sit down and enjoy a cup of tea while the robots set FIRE to the boat?"

The boat's on fire? I thought. I wasn't going to wait to find out. I ran outside, with my gun in my hand. I looked around. Robots, everywhere. Jack was dead. And... my parents. Only Mike and the guinea pig were still fighting. I joined in by shooting an armada officer. I guess I wasn't paying attention, because my memory went fuzzy then.

I woke up in a strange room, my vision failing me. Now I sit here, looking around. I shouldn't be writing this, I'm too tired and depressed. I think I'll set this down and continue tomorrow.

Friday, April 16

So, I'm a prisoner. I woke up and saw bars in front of me. I freaked out. I never thought I'd end up as a prisoner to these strange robots. I sat around, waiting for something to happen. I heard there was food in jail. Apparently not this one. When I noticed the sun coming up, I heard someone- or something, walking down the stairs. I assumed it was just another robot. But, no. It was an overweight pirate with a huge beard and a monkey in a soldier's outfit. This world sure is messed up, I thought.

"My vision seems to be failing me! Are you a boy, or a girl?" the man asked. Suddenly, a strange parchment floated in front of me, with two choices: Boy or Girl. I was confused. I'll admit, I can be a bit strange sometimes. I clicked girl to see what happened. Suddenly, I turned into a girl with pink hair. I freaked out but was relieved when a back button appeared. I touched it and chose boy.

"So, how did you get arrested?" said the pirate.

A few choices appeared. I chose the one with a picture of a red blade. Suddenly, I had a big sword. Not my type. I pressed back and chose the gun. That's more like it.

So, the rest of the day was kind of blah... they broke me out, I rescued a crane from "Mooshu" and fought some huge robots... No big deal.. Until I met the leader: Deacon, according to the monkey. I sort of didn't trust him, because, I mean, who trusts a monkey? I just went with it. He called on these robots with wings. It was then I figured out that robots have genders, too. Strange.

I started fighting them, and these blue squares appeared everywhere. I didn't know what was happening. I just followed the directions that the pirate and his monkey told me. I guess I won... it wasn't very hard. We arrived in Skull Island eventually. It felt good to be home. But it was so different without my family. How did I know if Kayla was alright? Exactly, I didn't. I feared I would never know.

"Speak to Captain Avery. He's a good friend of mine," the pirate named Boochbeard, apparently, said. Suddenly, the strangest thing happened. A huge picture appeared in front of me of Boochbeard and his monkey running down a cliff, avoiding a rolling stone. It was all I could see. It stayed there for a few seconds, and then disappeared. I was standing in a large office. There were people everywhere, with blue names floating on top of them. It was very strange. I saw one person run through another person. That's just SCARY, you have to admit. So, I worked my way through the crowd and started talking to Avery. He gave me my own little room down at Avery's court. He said I would begin training the next day. So now, I sit on my hammock writing my tale. What a strange day. Now, as I blow the candles out, I look to tomorrow, knowing that everything will be all right, and that the next little story of my life was soon to begin.
