A Smuggler's Story (Part 3) by Joshua Xavier

The Confession

It had been about two minutes since Malorn was told about Captain Avery’s “new friends” and Malorn remained in the same position.

“Malorn, are you alright?” asked Captain Avery.

“Uhhhh…” Malorn began, “I-I don’t know.”

Captain Avery smirked.

“Anyways”, started Avery, “How is your… sister?”

Malorn’s eyes widened.

“I… I need to confess about something”, said Malorn.

Avery smiled. “Oh, of course you do”, replied the Captain.

“How’d you know?” asked Malorn.

Captain Avery continued to smile. “You’ve just been acting differently lately. Listen Malorn, I commend your courage. You’re extremely brave, but you disobeyed me.”

Malorn glanced around the room to see if anyone was in the room, even though he knew that nobody was there.

“So are you going to arrest me or something?” asked Malorn.

“Not this time”, began Avery. “I’ve got something planned for you.”

Malorn glanced around the room again. “What is it?” he asked.

Avery frowned. “A civil war wages on in Monquista. I am sure you have heard about it.”

Malorn nodded.

“My sister…”

“Enough with the sister stuff, Malorn” began Avery, “I know who she really is.”

Malorn nodded again.

“Please continue Malorn” said Captain Avery.

“Well, umm…” he began, “Scarlet has been sailing there to help the Rebel Opposition fight against the crown. But… she hasn’t been able to enter the Tierra Primata skyway lately. She has been turned away by a large Monquistan blockade.”

“Exactly!” shouted Avery, “A Monquistan blockade has cut off all of our contact with the rebels. I have put together a pirate fleet to go out and cripple the blockade.”

Malorn smiled. “Good “he said.

“No, not entirely” replied Captain Avery, “The rebellion is running low on ammunition and ships. This is where you come in.”

“Soooo…”

“So I want you to smuggle ammunition into the Tierra Primata skyway and bring it to Zenda, the Opposition Stronghold”, said Avery. “Continue smuggling throughout Skull Island, and I will arrest you, agree to help the Monquistan Opposition, and you are free to go.”

Malorn smiled. “Alright Captain, I’ll do it. Thank you.”

Avery nodded. “Start tomorrow. Get a good night sleep and then sail to Monquista tomorrow.”

“You got it Cap’n.”

Malorn left Avery’s office and jogged across the courtyard. Suddenly, he stopped. She stood on the cliff overlooking the docks, her black hair flowing in the wind. Scarlet.

“Scarlet!” yelled Malorn.

She spun around and smiled. She jogged over to him with her hair blowing across her face.

“Hey”, she said.

“Avery knows”, began Malorn, “He wants me to smuggle ammunition into Monquista for the rebels.”

Scarlet frowned. She had a feeling that Captain Avery knew something.

“Can I help you?” she asked.

“No.”

“WHAT? Why not?” she asked.

“I just don’t want you to get caught. Let me do this on my own, please” he begged.

Scarlet shook her head. She knew that he cared about her, but she also knew that she would fine. “Bye, Malorn”. Then she rolled her eyes and walked away. Now it was Malorn who was shaking his head as he walked back up to his office to get some rest.

Malorn awoke at the crack of dawn the next morning. He quickly strutted passed the shops and down to the docks where his crew was waiting for him. The sails were up and all the ropes were tied. Malorn climbed aboard and guided the ship into the nearest windlane that could take him to the Monquistan Stormgate. After sailing for about fifteen minutes, they reached the stormgate and passed into the Tierra Primata Skyway.

“Oh, my”, whispered Malorn.

There were hundreds of them, as far as the eye could see. Hundreds and hundreds of Monquistan war vessels scattered across the sky. The pirate fleet had not defeated the blockade; they only pushed them back into Monquista.

“We may have a problem…”

To be continued…
